I just tried one thing. I published the original who's online module and that one shows the guests properly. So they must be somewhere.

I just checked the original module and we are using the same line of code for this:
FROM #__session WHERE guest=1

My guess is since you have gotten as far as getting your sessions back and the other module is reading them then the ball is back in my court as some kind of bug.

I have seen sometimes the moolet not work if there is only one guest, do you have two different browsers on your computer you can hit the site with and try to get that number up to two and see if it kicks in?

Yeah I tried that many times. It only shows guest if a member signs out. But normal visitors don't show up.
